Does anyone know what this is?
It’s a shrubby bush, flowered very early and is now almost fully in leaf. The blossom smells a bit like jasmine. The main branches have a rather flaky outer ‘bark’, a bit like an established clematis.

Hello – I think it’s probably lonicera fragrantissima – a winter flowering honeysuckle. Smells divine but makes an untidy plant. Worth it though for that scent. Enjoy the rest of your Somerset weekend.
Oh well done Harriet! I’ve just Googled it and I think you’re right. Thank you.
It does smell lovely – it’s the first year that I’ve noticed it. It’s been planted in a very good spot above some steps leading out into the garden so that the flowers can cascade downwards properly.
I owe the previous owner of my garden a very great deal. She was very talented.
Drat, saw it, realised I knew, came here to say wisely “I think it is lonicera fragrantissima” and found I had been beaten to it. It’s gorgeous. I have one but mine is young and small!
Well, thank you anyway! I’d no idea they existed or that I had one! *hangs head in shame*
Let’s hope they’re right! It’s very pretty, whatever it is. I asked about a plant that appeared in my little garden last year, and everyone plumped for viburnum. Sadly, it turned out to be an escape of my neighbour’s very ugly and invasive cotoneaster, such a dull municipal plant…..
Crowdsourcing – brilliant!
